May 2008 - Congratulations to South Vancouver Neighbourhood House for winning the City of Vancouver - Diversity Award for Individual / Group!
Highlight from a Youth Ambassador Community:
Dr. Linda Hill and her Youth Ambassador team in Cowichan Valley discussed how the Grade 5 students they have worked with see the Youth Ambassadors as ‘heroes.’ They realize that their heroes have lived through difficult experiences and have emerged as successful leaders who are proud of their differences, - and will feel hopeful as well as inspired. During the discussion about being leaders, role models and heroes, the Youth Ambassadors talked about how far they have come: “A year and a half ago I wouldn’t have believed that I would be in a leadership course getting ready to go and teach things to younger kids.”
Provincial Scope:

At the Youth Ambassador Train-the-Trainer Workshop held in Vancouver in May 2008, Community Organizers gained knowledge and skills in facilitating training for Youth Ambassadors and supporting them in their delivery of workshops. Eric Wong, a Diversity Consultant, clarified key points to for Community Organizers to share with school staff during discussions about the program, including: talking about learning outcomes and how the program fits the Ministry of Education’s Social Responsibility Framework; discussing the benefits of the YA program through the learning objectives and leadership opportunities; and highlighting the role that the Youth Ambassador program can play in complimenting what educators and youth workers are already doing to educate youth about diversity and social responsibility.
There is an increasing awareness of the program’s benefits to youth in our Youth Ambassador communities across the province. AMSSA has connected with Pat Clark with the BCTF, Stephen Hansen with the BCSTA, Annette Vogt at the BC Institute for Safer Schools and Communities, and Romi Chandra with the Kinex Youth Initiative, all of whom have shown their support for the SH Youth Ambassador Diversity Program in various ways.
